Game Jam 2011

So I'm in Morrisville now, and I've been teamed up with a programmer and a couple of great artists. We clicked well, and quickly formulated an idea for a game which has been evolving throughout the night. I'm impressed by the rapid progress we're making, and I feel confident that we can put out a fun and complete project by the deadline. We'll see if I still have that confidence late Saturday night when we're debugging and rushing to tie up loose ends.

The topic we're encouraged to build our game around is "extinction," which I believe our little game is incorporating just enough. I can't imagine the number of Dinosaur Vs. Asteroid games this contest will produce... but I also can't pretend I don't want to play them.

I have already learned a lot from this event, and it's only the first night. I'm psyched about the whole thing. Can't wait to share our project with the world.

Update

Soon, I will start writing in-depth reviews of games. I'm just settling into new classes for the semester, including one I'm very excited about: Video Game Narrative. It's an English class, and will focus on the stories/backstories/character profiles/etc. of video games.

On the first day of class, the instructor presented an opportunity to connect with the coordinator of the Global Game Jam at Morrisville College. I don't know a lot about it, really, but it's a competition between thousands of students around the world to design and develop a video game following a certain theme within 48 hours. I don't have much programming experience, so I'd primarily be a storyboard writer/designer, and I would take on whatever various tasks I can handle. I can't wait to see how this turns out... it should be a good learning experience for me.

Click here to check out the website for the competition. Once the contest is over, the games will all be uploaded onto there. I'll keep this blog updated, and I'll link to the finished product as soon as I'm able. It starts this Friday, so hopefully you can expect to see results by early next week.

A blog is born...

Gaming and writing are passions of mine. It's time I put the two together. Give me a few days for planning and preparation, and we'll see what I can do with this thing. Wish me luck. And do return.
